LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola University has hired Tawni Peterson as the advisor of Biola's new cheerleading program which will begin in the Fall of 2007.

Peterson, who competed collegiately at the University of Arkansas and at Fresno State University, brings her 10 years of varsity coaching experience to Biola where she will oversee the formation of the Eagles recently-added cheerleading program.

"I am excited about this opportunity," said Peterson. "Having a chance to coach in a Christian, supportive environment is paramount to what I am about and what I want to be as a coach. I am excited about giving the Biola community something to be a part of and create a spirit of excitement about our athletic teams."

Peterson comes to Biola after coaching the last three years at East Hills Christian School in Pensacola, Florida, where her teams won the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders National Championship in 2006 and a top five finish in 2007.

She has also worked with and choreographed nationally ranked squads across the country including working with Whittier Christian High School. Overall, Peterson has 15 years experience as a cheerleading and gymnastics coach.

"I look forward to the opportunity and the challenge of forming and shaping something from the beginning," said Peterson.

The program, under the direction of the Biola Department of Athletics, will be holding tryouts for the new squad May 4-6.
