LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Seniors Katie Gustaveson and Amerra Kesterson were named GSAC pitcher and player of the week, respectively, for the week of April 9-15 the league office announced.
For Gustaveson, a senior from Lake View Terrace, it was the second straight week she earned the honor and the third time this season. Gustaveson won four games last week, striking out 21 batters in 29 innings and allowing just two runs in five starts. Pitching in her third game in as many days, Gustaveson threw a three-hit shutout against NCAA Division II No. 22-ranked Hawaii Pacific, striking out five as Biola won 1-0.
On Saturday, Gustaveson started both ends of the doubleheader against No. 7 Vanguard, earning the victory in game 2 after a no decision in the first game. On the day, she allowed no runs on 5 hits in 10 innings with 4 strikeouts. Gustaveson was chosen as the NAIA Region II Softball Pitcher of the Week.
Kesterson, a senior from Anaheim, was 15-for-26 (.577) at the plate in Biola's eight games last week. For the week, she had 11 runs, three doubles, a triple, two home runs, six RBI, four walks, and three stolen bases.
On the Eagles' trip to Hawaii, Kesterson hit a home run in the sweep of BYU-Hawaii, scored a school-record five runs in a five-inning win in the first of two wins over Chaminade HI, and had a triple, double, and stole two bases in the split with NCAA Division II No. 22 ranked Hawaii Pacific.
Back on the mainland, she had a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base in the split with No. 7-ranked Vanguard. Kesterson was also selected as the NAIA Region II Softball Player of the Week.
Biola returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 21), hosting Azusa Pacific at Noon.
