Biola Matches Record with 14th Straight Win; Splits With No. 9 Point Loma

Jimmy Johnson pitched a complete game three-hitter to win game one

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO --- Jimmy Johnson pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs on three hits as No. 21-ranked Biola University tied a school record with its 14th straight victory, beating No. 9 Point Loma Nazarene 5-2 in the first game of a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday at Carroll B Land Field in San Diego.

The Eagles (18-6, 12-5 GSAC) had that winning-streak snapped in the second game despite a strong comeback attempt, falling 9-5 to the Sea Lions (18-8, 12-6 GSAC).

Johnson was impressive in game one, throwing nine strong innings, recording nine strikeouts and allowing just one earned run to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Though he didn't get a ton of run support, he got enough as the Eagles scored five runs on 11 hits behind him. Biola got on the board in the third as Chris Foreman led off with a double, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Smith.

The Eagles added another in the fourth on a lead-off home run by Kris Cook and score an unearned run in the fifth to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

Point Loma got two back in the bottom of the eighth inning on a pair of errors by Biola.

But the Eagles got those runs right back in the ninth as Bobby Slater doubled in the first and then scored on an error by the Sea Lions' catcher.

Johnson then retired Point Loma in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.

Game two wasn't that nice to Biola starter Josh Baas, who was tagged for six runs in 2/3 innings. The big blow came off the bat of Travis Riley, who capped the scoring and ended Baas' day with a three-run home run to right field.

Biola got one run back with a solo home run by David West, but the Sea Lions scored two more in the second and added another in the bottom of the fifth.

The Eagles tried to rally for a late come-back, but it fell a bit short. Biola scored two in the top of the sixth on an error by the Point Loma right fielder to make it 9-3.

Then, with two outs in the top of the seventh, Nick Dietzen and Cook hit back-to-back home runs to make it 9-5 before David West flew out to deep centerfield to end the game.

Cook finished the day going 3-for-7 with two home runs. Scott Nelson was 4-for-8 and Dietzen finished going 3-for-7.

Biola tied the school record with its 14th straight win in game one, matching a streak which had been accomplished twice before. The last time an Eagle team won 14 in a row came in 1999.

Biola looks to get back to its winning ways on Wednesday, traveling to The Master's College on Wednesday (Mar. 21) for the first of a home-and-home with the Mustangs.
