LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The bad news: Biola lost 8-1 to Westmont in a GSAC match Tuesday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Complex. The good news: The Eagles win at No. 1 doubles was their first point ever in a GSAC match.
Biola dropped to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the GSAC with the loss while Westmont improved to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
The Eagles, who recently reinstated the varsity men's tennis program after a nine-year hiatus, had been swept in all of their previous GSAC matches including three years worth of matches back in the mid-90s.
However, Joel Huibregtse and Tyler Jung combined to beat Burke Marold and Ryan Schultz in a thrilling match at No. 1 doubles. The Biola pair forced a tiebreaker in the match and fought off five match points before winning the tiebreaker 11-9.
Overall, though, the day belonged to Westmont as the Warriors won the rest of the matches on the day. Biola came close at No. 4 singles as Greg Cox battled Arthur Kalayian in another close match, eventually falling 7-5, 6-3.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday (Mar. 3) as they travel to face No. 6 Fresno Pacific at Noon.
