IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola's pitching staff shutdown one of the league's best offenses Saturday in a two-game sweep over No. 11 Concordia University, winning game one 7-1 and game two by a 7-5 count Saturday in Irvine.
Biola improved to 7-5 on the season and 3-4 in GSAC play with its third-straight win. Concordia dropped to 9-3 and 5-3 in conference action.
The story of the game was the job done by the Biola pitching staff, which combined to allow just four earned runs on 13 hits over the 16 innings played Saturday. The offense picked things up from there, providing just enough support against another strong pitching staff.
In game one, junior Jordan Litle allowed just one run on one hit over five innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0. Sophomore Charlie Gausepohl blanked Concordia over the final four innings, scattering two hits to pick up his first save of the year.
Matt Love provided the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Concordia got on the board first, scoring a run on a double play in the bottom of the fourth inning. Biola came back to take the lead with two in the bottom of the sixth as Love scored on a Concordia error followed by Chris Foreman scoring on an RBI, pinch-hit single by Bobby Slater.
Biola added two more in the top of the seventh inning as Nick Dietzen played Kris Cook with an RBI double, followed by Scott Nelson scoring via a wild pitch.
Biola blew the game open in the top of the ninth inning as Love cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to seal the deal.
In game two, Biola struck early with a four-spot in the top of the first inning. Danny Morrow had the big hit for BU, an RBI-triple to score Adam Yoder. Dietzen then drove in Morrow with a single to give Biola a 2-0 lead. The Eagles added two more on an error and a fielder's choice to extend the lead out to four.
Concordia struck back in the bottom of the frame with three runs of its own including a pair of unearned runs after an uncharacteristic error by Biola.
Concordia then took the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs. But Biola bounced back with one in the top of the fourth as Morrow struck again with an RBI-single to score Yoder.
Two innings later, Biola took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth, both coming via the sacrifice fly. First David West drove home Foreman, who had led the inning off with a triple, then it was Morrow's turn as he sent home pinch-runner Nelson, who was in running for catcher Daniel Bodemer.
Derek Dietzen then closed the door, pitching the final two innings and scattering two hits to pick up his first save of the year. Jimmy Johnson picked up his third victory as he allowed just two hits over two innings to keep Biola in the game.
Morrow finished the day going 3-for-6 with three RBI, two runs scored and a triple to lead the Biola offensive attack.
Biola returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 28), traveling to Westmont College for the first game of a home-and-home with the Warriors. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
