Eagles Swept by Azusa Pacific in GSAC Openers

GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX

AZUSA, Calif. --- Despite scoring 14 runs and pounding out 16 hits in two games, Biola University dropped a conference-opening doubleheader against arch-rival Azusa Pacific by scores of 20-7 and 8-7 at Cougar Field in Azusa.

The Eagles drop to 3-3 on the season and 0-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. The Cougars, who are off to the best start in school history, sit at 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the GSAC.

Biola got off to a quick start in the first game, scoring two in the first and four in the third to take a 6-3 lead. However, Azusa Pacific roarded back into the game with a six-run fifth inning followed by a five-run sixth to take control and cruise to the easy win.

In the second game, it looked like the Eagles would salvage a split as a fifth-inning grand slam by designated hitter Bobby Slater gave Biola a 5-2 lead.

The Eagles would take a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the decisive seventh frame before the Cougars struck back with three in the inning to tie the score and force extra innings. After Biola went 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth, Matt Venegas sent everyone home with a walk-off RBI single, scoring pinch runner Shaun Lane.

Slater was 2-for-5 on the day with five RBIs to lead the offense. Jon Young pitched well in game two, scattering six hits and allowing just one earned run in 3-2/3 innings.

Biola opens the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, hosting The Master's College in a GSAC game. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
