Biola Women Sweep; Men Split at La Verne Invitational

LA VERNE, Calif. --- Despite going nearly a month between meets, the Biola men's and women's swim teams put together a strong showing on Saturday at the Leo Invitational Meet hosted by the University of La Verne at Las Flores Park.

The women's team was dominated in beating Concordia University (Calif.) 154-73 and the University of La Verne 175-79. On the men's side, the Eagles downed La Verne 131-88, but fell to Concordia 154-93.

There were eight first place finishes for the women's team, with six coming from Biola's talented freshman. Newcomer April Smith took first in the 100 Breast, 100 Free, and 200 Breast to lead the way while freshman Erika Johnson won both the 500 and 1000 Free and Rachel Pettit won the 50 Free. Senior Christina Piakak took first in the 200 Fly and Brittany Eaton took top honors in the one-meter diving compeititon.

On the men's side, Sam Canty swept both boards in diving, winning the one-meter and three-meter boards with relative ease. Paul Mendoza took first in the 200, 500, and 1000 Free, while Ben Oviedo won the 100 and 200 backstroke. Zach Perkins also took top honors in the 50 Free.

There were also several new national qualifiers at the meet. New national qualifiers were Lindy Shields (200 Back), Christina Piakak (100 Fly), and Ricky Nerud (100, 200 Fly).

Biola will return to action after Christmas Break, swimming in the UC Irvine Ayers Hotel Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 5.
