Forwards Lead Biola to 59-45 Win Over Whittier

Danny Jones led the Eagles with 19 points and 14 rebounds

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Forwards Danny Jones and Rocky Hampton combined for 35 points and 27 rebounds to help lead Biola to a 59-45 win over Whittier College in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles improve to 5-3 with their second-straight victory while dropping the Poets to 3-2 on the season.

Jones was Biola's leading scorer with 19 points on the night, pulling down 14 rebounds and adding four assists and a steal. Hampton recorded 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles and blocked four shots.

After a slow start in its last game, Biola jumped out quickly on Whittier, rolling to an early 15-4 lead just over seven minutes into the contest. The extended that lead to as many at 17 in the first half and headed to the locker room with a 31-16 lead. The Eagles held the Poets to just 24 percent shooting in the first half while hitting nearly 43 percent of their shots.

In the second half, Biola held strong despite improved shooting and better defense from Whittier. The Poets closed the gap to 12 on a number occasions and even pulled within 11 at 49-38 with 5:15 to go. But sophomore guard Danny Campbell and freshman guard Luke Duperron hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Eagles to end the threat.

Duperron finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals for Biola while Campbell had six points on the night.

The Eagles return to the hardwood on Saturday (Dec. 8) for another non-conference contest, this time hosting Pomona-Pitzer College at 7:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
