Summer Matthews scored 20 points but it was not enough as Biola University lost 67-47 to host Bethel College (Tenn.) in the opening game of the McKenzie Rotary Club Classic on Friday.
The Eagles drop to 1-2 on the season with the loss while the Wildcats improve to 2-1 overall.
Matthews had a strong night for the Eagles, hitting 9-for-12 from the field for 20 points–just one off her career-high set last year. She also added eight rebounds on the night.
Whitney Baird scored 17 points to lead Bethel with Nina Djokovic adding 11.
Biola remained close through the first half, trailing 30-26 at the intermission. However, the second half belonged to Bethel as the Wildcats shot 45 percent overall while holding the Eagles to just 32 percent. The Eagles also committed 31 turnovers while Bethel had just 18 in the game.

Kelsey Erickson scored eight points for the Eagles while junior
Megann Alberts was held to just seven points.
Biola takes on Williams Baptist College (Ark.) to close out the tournament on Saturday (Nov. 10) at Noon ET.
