Biola Women Split; Men Fall at Pomona-Pitzer Double Dual

Ben Oviedo was one of five Biola swimmers to win two events

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- The Biola University women's swim team split a double dual, beating Cal State East Bay and falling to Pomona-Pitzer, while the men lost a single dual to Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at Haldeman Pool in Claremont.

The Eagles defeated Cal State East Bay 150-51 but lost to Pomona-Pitzer 123-81. The men lost to Pomona-Pitzer by a count of 148-61.

The women's team pulled out wins in five events overall with freshmen Erika Johnson and April Smith each winning twice. Johnson won the 500 and the 1,000 free while Smith touched first in the 200 free and 200 breaststroke.

Meghan Samsvick, Smith, Christina Piakak and Sarah Warkentin combined for victory in 200 Medley Relay, narrowly edging the team from Pomona-Pitzer.

There were several new national qualifiers for the women: Hannah Lawman, 200 Breast; Emily Mosbacher, 50, 100 Free; Jaclynn Petrilli, 200 Fly; Christina Piakak, 200 Fly; April Smith, 200 Free, 200 Breast.

The Biola men also had a strong showing with six first-place finishes. Zach Perkins won the freestyle sprints (50, 100 Free), Paul Mendoza  took the distance freestyle events (500, 1000 Free), and Ben Oviedo won the 200 Back and 200 IM.

Also, Oviedo (200 Back) and Perkins (100 Free) earned national qualifying times.

The Eagles return to the pool again on December 8th for the University of La Verne Invitational.
