EL CAJON, Calif. --- It wasn't pretty, but at the end of the day, it goes down in the win column as Biola opened the GSAC schedule with a 69-62 victory over San Diego Christian College on Tuesday night at Ryan Athletic Center.
The win also brings the Eagles back to .500 on the season at 3-3 as they move to 1-0 in GSAC play. The Hawks, who were playing with just seven players due to injuries, drop to 1-2 and 0-1 in conference.
Junior forward Megann Alberts led all scorers with 25 points and added 12 rebounds for Biola. Sophomore guard Chelsea De Luca scored 19 points--11 in the second half.
While the Hawks were missing a few players due to injury, Biola's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer Summer Matthews sat out the game due to an injury of her own.
The Eagles led throughout the majority of the game until a run in the second half helped the Hawks tie the score and eventually take the lead. With just over three minutes to play, Kelsey Erickson rebounded a missed free throw by Biola and hit a baseline jumper to knot the score at 59-59.
After a missed three-pointer on the other end, the Eagles came back down and took the lead back with a three-pointer by De Luca. On th e ensuing possession, Erickson made a great steal to give the Eagles the ball back with just over a minute to play. Biola then hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to ice the victory.
Biola shot well in the contest, hitting on 49 percent of its shots and committed just 16 turnovers on the night. The Hawks hit 41 percent from the field but were just 6-for-23 from beyond the arc.
