BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Jenna Sanchez headed home a goal in the 80th minute to give Cal State San Bernardino a 2-1 win over Biola University in a non-conference women's soccer match on Monday night on Al Barbour Field in La Mirada.
The Eagles drop to 2-7-2 on the season with the loss while the Coyotes, an NCAA Division II school, improve to 6-6-2.
Cal State San Bernardino got on the scoreboard first in the 37th minute as Krista Feer took advantage of a misplayed scoop by Biola's goalkeeper and shot the ball into the empty net.
The Eagles struck back in the second half, breaking a long home scoreless string with a goal by Gabby Jolin in the 54th minute. Jolin, who has scored the last two goals for Biola, gathered a lose ball near the top of the box, turned and fired the ball into the top corner of the net.
The goal snapped a 394 minute home scoreless drought for the Eagles, who had not scored a goal at Barbour Field since beating Trinity International University 2-1 on Sept. 14.
However, the Coyotes kept the pressure up and ended up scoring the equalizer with just over 10 minutes remaining. After earning a corner kick, Ashley Haagsma sent a beautiful curling ball into the box which Sanchez headed home for the match-winner.
Biola had a number of great scoring chances, but–as has been the story all season–were unable to finish. The best chance came in the 30th minute as a scramble appeared to give the Eagles a wide open net with the goalie well out of position. However, a quick shot was blocked by a sprawling CSUSB defender and the followup went wide.
The Coyotes' goalkeeper Laura Lyons made five saves to earn the victory in her first start of the season. Biola netminder Shannon Carter took the loss in her third appearance this year.
Biola is now winless in its last seven matches, posting a 0-5-2 record during that stretch and coring just four goals.
The Eagles continue their busy week of home games on Wednesday (Oct. 10) hosting Hope International University in a GSAC match at 7:00 p.m. at Al Barbour Field.
