Biola Ends No. 1 Concordia's Shutout Streak, Still Falls 3-1

Nick Bautista broke an 878+ minute shutout streak with a goal for Biola

BOX SCORE

IRVINE, Calif. --- Despite ending No. 1 Concordia's 878 minute streak without allowing a goal, the lone tally by Biola was not enough to knock off the top team in the NAIA as CU held on for a 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon in Irvine.

Biola dropped to 5-8-0 on the season and 1-4-0 in conference play while Concordia remained perfect at 11-0-0 on the season and 5-0-0 in the GSAC.

Concordia got off to a quick start with a goal just 11 minutes into the match. Eric Mendoza turned and fired a quick shot inside the box to beat the keeper and give CU a 1-0 lead.

In the 28th minute, Biola knotted the score as Nick Bautista gathered a loss ball at the top of the box and fired it quickly past the Concordia netminder to the upper left corner of the goal. It was the first goal Concordia has allowed in 878:14, a stretch dating back to its first match of the season.

However, Concordia took back the lead just one minute before the half as Nelson Rios cracked a quick shot through traffic in the box.

After the half, both teams had great chances, but it was Concordia who scored a big insurance goal in the 61st minute to put the game away. Jeff Clark, the 2006 GSAC player of the year, launched a quick shot from 35 yards out, beating the keeper and giving Concordia a 3-1 lead.

Concordia netminder Mike Borst made four saves to earn the win. He made a couple of big saves in the second half when Biola was threatening. In the 60th minute, Borst made a point-blank save on a shot by Humberto Toscan.

The match was the fourth straight against NAIA nationally ranked teams and is the sixth in a series of eight games against such teams.

The Eagles travel to Hope International on Tuesday (Oct. 9) for a GSAC road match set to kick off at 3:00 p.m.
