Westmont Scores Early, Often in 5-0 Win Over Biola

BOX SCORE

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Westmont College scored four times before the half and cruised to a 5-0 win over Biola University in a Golden State Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon in Santa Barbara.

The Eagles drop to 6-10-0 on the season and are 2-6-0 in GSAC play while the Warriors improve to 6-7-0 and 2-7-0 in conference.

Westmont got on the board quickly, netting a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the match. The first came in the eighth minute as Sammy Montemer scored from five yards out off a nifty pass from Anthony Niboli.

Just two minutes later the Warriors took advantage of a Biola foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Johnny Alcaraz converted the spot kick to put Westmont up 2-0.

In the 24th minute, Sergio Hernandez headed home a cross from Jonathon Schoff. Just 15 seconds later Jake Joyner scored on a bicycle-kick off a quick rebound from a shot by Saul Moreno.

The Warriors wrapped up the scoring with a goal in the 82nd minute off the foot of Justin Miller.

The loss was the worst for a Biola men's soccer team since suffering a 7-2 loss at the hands of the Warriors on Oct. 9, 1996.

The Eagles' playoff hopes took a serious hit with the loss and they will need to win their final two matches in order to reach the postseason.

The first of those two contests comes on Tuesday (Oct. 23) as Biola takes on California Baptist University in Riverside in a GSAC match at 3:00 p.m.
