Biola Opens Season Strong at PCSC Relays

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The Biola University Swimming and Diving team kicked off their season this past weekend at the PCSC Pentathlon and Relay meet at California Baptist University in Riverside.

The Pentathlon, which was held on Friday, consists of five events that every swimmer competes in. At the end of the five events their total time was tallied, and the ten swimmers with the lowest times were given awards. On Saturday, the Eagles returned to compete in a meet consisting only of relays.

Biola came out strong on Friday as April Smith place fifth overall in the long IM pentathlon for the women. On the men's side, Ben Oviedo and Zach Perkins placed fifth in the long IM pentathlon and the freestyle pentathlon respectively.

On Saturday the Eagles faired well against some strong competition in the relay meet. The women placed 7th overall, just edging out Fresno Pacific whose swim team is in their inaugural year. The men also managed to edge out Fresno Pacific on their way to a fourth place overall finish.

During the weekend there were several national qualifying swims. Qualifiers on the women's side were: Erika Johnson 200, 500 Free; April Smith 100 Free, 100 Breast, 200 IM; and Sarah Warkentin 100, 200, 500 Free. The male qualifiers were: Paul Mendoza 200, 500 Free; Ben Oviedo 100 Back, 100 Fly, 200 IM; and Zach Perkins 50, 200 Free.

The Men and Women also qualified in the 200, 400, and 800 Freestyle relays and the 400 Medley relay.

The team will return to the pool on November 3rd for a double dual meet against Pomona-Pitzer College and Cal State East Bay at Pomona.
