Eagles Fall To Westmont, 70-59

Danny Jones had 14 points and 14 rebounds on the evening

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Luke Allen scored 14 points off the bench to lead Westmont College to a 70-59 victory over Biola and spoiling Head Coach Dave Holmquist's 900th game at the helm for the Eagles on Tuesday night in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Chase Gymnasium in La Mirada.

Biola drops to 9-7 on the season and 3-3 in GSAC while the Warriors improve to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

The Eagles received another big night from their forwards Danny Jones and Rocky Hampton. Jones had 14 points and 14 rebounds while Hampton, who was in foul trouble most of the night, finished with 13 points and 10 boards.

The two teams battled back and forth with Biola holding the advantage in the first part of each half and Westmont the second part.

Westmont broke open a close game with a short run to lead 30-22 with 3:24 left to go in the first half, but Biola closed the gap back to three thanks to a last second three-pointer by Solomon Mercado. The trey took the teams to locker room with the Warriors holding a slight 33-30 lead.

In the second half, the Eagles came out gunning, taking a 46-39 lead five minutes into the half. Biola held a seven-point lead at four different times during the first part of the second half, but Westmont turned it on again late thanks to a 13-2 run. The Eagles layup by Jones with 8:39 remaining in the game proved to be their final field goal of the contest.

Allen was a key down the stretch for the Warriors, drilling a long three-pointer with four minutes remaining to give Westmont a 59-55 advantage. Overall he was 5 of 9 from the field and added two assists and a pair of steals.

As mentioned earlier, the game was the 900th career game coached by Holmquist, who is 688-212 in those contests.

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 13) for a tough contest at #10 Concordia University slated to tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Irvine.
