No. 1 Vanguard Too Much For Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- No. 1-ranked and undefeated Vanguard University proved itself worthy of the top spot in the NAIA with a 98-72 victory over Biola University Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium in La Mirada.

The Lions, who have won 35 consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference games, improve to 14-0 on the season and 9-0 in conference action. The Eagles, who dropped their third straight, fall to 7-10 and 3-6 in GSAC play.

Biola sophomore Megann Alberts scored a game-high 29 points and had six rebounds in 34 minutes. Senior Mandi England had 11 points, including three three-pointers to open the contest.

Five players scored in double-figures for Vanguard, led by Jessica Richter's 26.

Biola hung tough with the NAIA's premier team for the first nine minutes of the game, jumping out to a quick 11-5 lead just over four minutes in.

The Lions then clawed their way back into the game and held a 25-23 lead at the 11:01 mark before going on a 17-0 run over the next four minutes to take control of things.

Biola looks to move back into the win column on Tuesday (Jan. 23) when it hosts arch-rival Azusa Pacific University in a GSAC contest on at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for the game. For more information, contact the Biola University Sports Information Office at (562) 903-4889.
