LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the second time this year, the Biola University 100 butterfly record has been broken. This time it was sophomore Richard Nerud pulling off the feat to highlight a sweep over Chapman University in a dual meet on Saturday.

The Eagles cruised to easy victories on both sides, winning the men's dual 115-33 and 133-41 on the women's side.

Nerud, who finished first in both events he competed in, touched first in the 100 fly in 52.78. He narrowly edged teammate Ben Oviedo, who finished in 52.99, also better than his previous school record of 53.25.

Nerud also took first in teh 100 backstroke with a 58.72, nearly two seconds better than the second place finisher.

Freshman Zachary Perkins also finished first in two events, winning the 50 free in 22.37 and the 100 free in 50.15.

On the women's side, two Eagles won a pair of events. Senior Shannon Lawrence won the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50 in 25.53 and the 100 in 56.44. Joining her was jurior Brittany Sharpe, who took the distance free events by winning the 200 free in 2:07.15 and the 500 in 5:52.07.

The most exciting event was the women's 100 butterfly as three swimmers finished within one second of each other for the top three spots. Junior Christina Piakak finished first in 1:00.37, followed by Chapman's Edna Best in 1:00.99 and Biola's Leigh Pearce in 1:01.48.

Biola looks again to defend its home pool next week, hosting Cal State East Bay in a dual meet on Saturday (Jan. 27). The sprint events will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the distance events coming later in the afternoon.
