Eagles Can't Hold Late Lead Against No. 3 Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola's two goal lead late in its rivalry match with No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific disappeared in a matter of 15 minutes as the Cougars came from behind to beat the Eagles 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon.

Skelly Keller headed in a goal five minutes into the first overtime to complete a remarkable comeback by Azusa in the GSAC opening game for the two long-time rivals.

The Cougars improve to 6-1-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in GSAC play while the Eagles suffered their second straight one-goal loss and dropped to 4-2-0 on the year and 0-1-0 in the conference.

Azusa scored a pair of goals with under 11 minutes remaining including a goal with just 15 seconds left in regulation to quickly erase the Eagles' 2-0 lead.

Biola took the crowd of 440 out of the game early as a trio of seniors opened the scoring in the eighth minute. The play started with Omar Villablanca making a great pass into the box where J.T. Searles one-touched the ball to Cody Moore, who blasted it past a Azusa keeper.

The Eagles added another goal in the 42nd minute as Nick Bautista found the back of the net with a quick hit.

Azusa was finally able to get on the scoreboard with a goal by Brandon Stirm in the 80th minute. Then, with just 15 seconds remaining, a cross by Dustin McBride found the head of Eric Winblad, sending the match to overtime and setting up the heroics by Keller.

Azusa has had the best of the series as of late, holding a 7-1-1 edge in the rivalry since 1999. Biola's lone victory was a 4-0 win at APU in 2002.

Biola continues GSAC play with a home match Saturday (Sept. 30) against No. 16 Concordia at 7:30 p.m.
