Eagles Escape with 1-0 OT Win Over Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Senior Natalie Thornton converted a penalty kick with just five minutes remaining in the second overtime period to give Biola a 1-0 non-conference win over Cal State San Marcos Saturday afternoon.

The match was the second in as many days for the Eagles (4-0-1), who battled to a 4-0 win over Simpson College less than 24 hours earlier.

Biola's offense struggled for the most part in the heat of Northern San Diego County, managing just seven shots in regulation.

However, senior Jordan Bishop created a great scoring chance in the match's 105th minute before being hauled down inside the penalty area.

Thornton's goal was her third in two days and her second consecutive match-winner.

While the Eagle offense struggled, the Biola defense shut down the upset-minded Cougar attack. Goalkeeper Keri Schulzwas again outstanding, making five saves including a number of the spectacular nature to earn her second straight shutout and third of the year.

Biola now embarks on its most crucial portion of the schedule, starting with a trip to Tennessee for the Lee University Flames Classic on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 22-23). The Eagles open with No. 7 Lindsey Wilson (KY) on Friday and play host and No. 2 Lee University (TN) on Saturday.

Upon their return to California, the Eagles open GSAC play against No. 4 Azusa Pacific on Tuesday (Sept. 26).
