Eagles Split in Day One of Concordia Festival

Irvine, Calif. - The Biola volleyball team opened the day with a stunning sweep over No. 7 Houston Baptist, but had to settle for a split on the day at the Concordia Labor Day Festival in Irvine.

The Eagles, who move to 4-2 overall, scored an impressive upset over the Huskies with a 30-26, 30-26, 30-26 sweep to open the day.

However, the excitement of that win did not propel them to another victory as No. 25 Westminster College held on for a 31-29, 30-22, 27-30, 26-30, 15-10 win in the nightcap.

Sophomore outside hitter Meghan Scheenstra led Biola with 25 kills in the first match and added 22 against the Griffins.

Fellow sophomore Kelsey Mitchell also recorded double-digits in the kill column with 13 to start the day and a match-high 24 in the nightcap.

Biola held off a late run by Houston Baptist in the first game to win 30-26. In the second game, the Eagles fought back from a 26-23 deficit in the first game to win 30-26.

With momentum on its side, Biola handed the No. 7 squad its first loss of the year with another 30-26 win.

The late heroics came a bit too late against Westminster as the Eagles dropped a heartbreaking game one 31-29 after leading 29-27.

The Griffins cruised to an easy win in game two and looked to be ready to seal the deal in game three while leading 22-18. Biola fought back to tie the match at 23, then rallied to win 30-27.

The Eagles held off Westminster in game four to force game five, but the Griffins stepped up and made just one error to Biola's eight and walked off with the win.

Biola continues tournament play on Saturday with a 9:00 a.m. match against Holy Names University at Concordia. The Eagles close out the Classic against Lewis-Clark State at 1:00 p.m. at Vanguard University.
