Biola Plays to Scoreless Draw with Trinity Western in Opener

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Biola's women's soccer team opened the season with an impressive defensive effort while playing to a scoreless draw against Trinity Western University on Barbour Field in La Mirada on Saturday.

The Eagles (0-0-1) started off the match slow, managing just one shot to Trinity's five through the first 45 minutes.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in the match, Biola picked up the pressure and came within inches of scoring. In the 81st minute, senior forward Jordan Bishop intercepted a failed clearance attempt by the Spartans' goalkeeper, but her shot from a tough angle sailed just high and wide.

Just three minutes later, senior midfielder Natalie Thornton had an open crack at the goal, but also missed just high.

In the 88th minute, junior defender Brandi Johannsen lofted a great cross into the box, but Trinity goalie Veronika Rogina made an amazing stop to Bishop's point-blank blast.

That was the last time either team would have at a quality scoring chance as the game ended with just one shot attempted in the 20 minutes of overtime.

Biola keeper Keri Schulz made just one save on the night in recording her first shutout of the season. Rogina made three saves for the Spartans.

Biola continues its season-opening home stand with a match against Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday (Aug. 31) at 5:00 p.m. on Barbour Field
