Oviedo Breaks 100 Fly Record as Eagles Split Duals At Cal Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Freshman Ben Oviedo broke the school record in the 100 butterfly as Biola split a double dual against Chapman and Cal Baptist on Saturday at the Cal Baptist Swim Complex in Riverside.

The Eagles recorded convincing wins over Chapman, downing the Panthers 115-47 on the men's side and 166-94 on the women's side. Cal Baptist, the defending NAIA champions, had little trouble with its competition, winning 230-41 on the men's side and 199-86 on the women's side.

Oviedo had a strong day for Biola, winning the 100 backstroke in 55.30 and placing second in the 100 fly in a school-record time of 53.25. He was edged out by just three-thousandths of a second by a Lancer swimmer.

Jeremy Davidson was third in two events, finishing the 100 back in 59.46 and the 500 free in 5:31.87. Zachary Perkins also had a pair of good place finishes, touching in third at 22.51 in the 50 free and fourth in the 50 fly at 25.83.

On the women's side, Christina Piakak placed first in the 100 butterfly, touching first in 1:01.53. She was the Eagles' lone event winner on the swimming side while Rachelle Peck won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 198.35 and 201.05, respectively.

In the 50 free, Biola placed three in the top five as Meghan Samsvick took second (26.40), Shannon Lawrence was third (26.50) with Sarah Warkentin touching fifth (26.89). Lawrence also placed second in the 100 free in 56.94 with Warkentin finishing third in 57.60.

Biola returns to the water in January, traveling to Irvine to take part in the UC Irvine Ayers Hotel Invitational on Saturday, Jan 6.
