PHOENIX --- Despite four players scoring in double-figures, Biola dropped its third straight game, falling 77-71 to Mount Vernon Nazarene Thursday night in its first game of the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix.
Ben Falkenberg scored 39 points to lead the Cougars, who improve to 10-3 on the season. Biola drops to 6-5 on the season.
Danny Jones had 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds while Rocky Hampton scored 12 and added 13 boards. Matt Emadi also added 13 points but hit just three of 13 shots from beyond the arc.
Overall, the Eagles struggled from long range, hitting 8-for-29 from the three-point line.
Biola held a 35-29 lead over Mt. Vernon Nazarene after the first 20 minutes of play, but couldn't hold off the Cougars second-half charge and were outscored 48-36 in the second.
The Eagles will play the second of three tournament games on Friday as they take on Northwest Oklahoma State at 6:00 p.m.
