No. 13 Biola's Upset Attempt Falls Just Short

Kelsey Mitchell helped the Biola attack with 12 kills
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- No. 13 Biola's attempt to pull an upset over yet another top-five team fell just short as No. 3 Concordia escaped Chase Gymnasium with a 30-22, 23-30, 23-30, 30-22, 15-10 victory Saturday night in the final regular season match for both teams.

Biola wraps up the regular season at 20-11 overall and 12-8 in GSAC play. The Eagles finish in a three-way tie for fourth in the conference with Azusa Pacific and Point Loma Nazarene.

Concordia-Irvine closes out the season with a mark of 25-3 and place second in the GSAC with a record of 17-3.

Despite losing the match, Biola continued its red-hot play as of late, taking the No. 3 team in NAIA to the limit--something no other team has done to Concordia this season.

Biola received 21 kills and 11 digs from sophomore Meghan Scheenstra. Fellow sophomore Kelsey Mitchell had 12 kills while junior Brittany Wing and freshman Kristen Peterson and 10 kills apiece.

Concordia was led by the 16 kills of Traci Weamer and also received 11 kills from Stephanie Scheele.

In the first game, the two teams battled back and forth before a 10-1 Concordia run gave the visiting side a lead it would not relinquish. Biola committed seven various errors over that 11 point stretch.

It was a different story in game two as Biola jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead thanks to a pair of blocks by Peterson and Scheenstra, then two monster kills by Scheenstra. Biola continued to build the lead, going up by as many as nine before setting for the seven point victory.

Game three was much of the same for Biola, as the home squad built a 14-9 lead early on. After Concordia closed the gap to 16-14, Biola scored eight of the next nine points to build the advantage back to 24-15 and cruised to another easy win.

Concordia was not finished, though, and battled strong through game four. Holding a slight lead at 20-18, Concordia began to play like the No. 3 team in the nation, going on a 7-1 run with the help of some great blocking, and won game four 30-22.

Game five as all Concordia, however, as CUI jumped out to a 10-5 lead and held on for the victory.

Biola now will await word on its placement in the NAIA Region II tournament which will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Biola will likely earn the No. 5 seed and travel to face No. 4 Azusa Pacific, though the official pairings will not be announced until tomorrow.
