LA MIRADA, Calif. --- In the sport of soccer, the term "unlucky" is thrown around quite a bit.
Monday night the term was quite apropos for Biola, as the Eagles had a pair of "unlucky" bounces go against them in a 2-0 loss to No. 9 Westmont.
In the first half, the Warriors (10-3-1, 5-1-1 GSAC) received a lucky break as Keri Schulz, the normally sure-handed netminder for Biola, was unable to hold on to a cross into the box. The ball rolled right onto the foot of Westmont's Amy Lawson, who struck the loose ball into the back of the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead after 10 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Eagles (5-5-3, 1-4-2 GSAC) came out firing and were able to take control of the match, firing of 13 shots, but unable to find the back of the net with any of them.
In the game's 70th minute, the Warriors were the benficiaries of another lucky bounce resulting in a much-needed insurance goal. Lawson started the attack with a run down the near side and cracked a shot from the top of the box. That shot was blocked by a Biola defender. Another Eagle defender then went to clear the ball, only to have it bounce off the referee and right back to Lawson, who banged it home for her second tally of the night and ninth on the season.
Werner was outstanding in goal, recording seven saves including a great leaping block of a shot by Biola forward Jordan Bishop in the match's waining minutes. Werner, who faced just three shots in the first half, was tested often in the second, facing 13 in the final 45 minutes.
The Eagles managed 16 shots on the night and were led by senior midfielder Natalie Thornton, who had five shots including two on goal.
Biola travels up to face Fresno Pacific University on Thursday (Oct. 19) in a GSAC match at 7:00 p.m.
