Eagles Work Overtime in 2-1 Win Over No. 21 Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Freshman Kahlie Reinecke tapped home the match-winning goal six minutes into the first overtime to give Biola a 2-1 upset win over No. 21 Vanguard University on Saturday night in Costa Mesa.

For the Eagles, the win snapped a six-match winless streak and gave them their first GSAC victory on the season. They are now 5-4-3 overall and 1-3-2 in the conference. Vanguard drops to 8-3-2, 2-3-1 in the conference.

Biola was outshot by an 18-2 count over the course of the match, but made both attempts count.

Junior Bryna Neill opened the scoring for Biola with a nifty goal in the 16th minute. Neill found the top corner of the net with a quick strike after receiving a nice pass from senior Jordan Bishop.

Vanguard began firing shot after shot at the Eagles' net after that, but were unable to pull even until a questionable call in the 60th minute gave the Lions a penalty kick. Heather Hutton was able to convert the spot kick and tie the match with her 11th goal of the season.

Vanguard kept up the assault on the Eagle net through the remainder of regulation and into the overtime period. Biola, however, is no stranger to overtime as this was their fifth of the season.

After the Biola goalkeeper Keri Schulz made a great save in the first few minutes of overtime, the Eagles came back down and earned their first corner kick of the night and turned it into the winning goal.

Junior Brandi Johannsen sent a perfect ball in toward the goal mouth where Reinecke tapped it into the back of the net.

The Eagles remain undefeated on the season at 2-0-3 in overtime matches.

Biola returns home for another big GSAC matchup on Monday (Oct. 16) as the Eagles face off against No. 9 Westmont at 7:00 p.m.
