LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior
Cody Moore headed in the go-ahead goal with 2:08 remaining to give No. 16-ranked Biola University a 2-1 win over California Baptist in a Golden State Athletic Conference men's soccer match Wednesday night at Al Barbour Field in La Mirada.
The Eagles improve to 8-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in conference play, moving them into a first-place tie in the GSAC with Concordia after the victory. The Lancers drop to 1-10-1 and 0-4-1 in GSAC action.
Moore's goal came just three minutes after Cal Baptist tied the match on a great shot by Robbie Dodson. Dodson broke free from the defense after a great through ball by Fashinu-Ron Nesbeth and struck it past the keeper with 5:00 remaining.
However, the Eagles did not give up and after a number of near-misses in the second period, finally were able to net their second goal of the evening in a heroic fashion.
Freshman Keir Mitchell opened the scoring for Biola with a shot through the wickets of the Lancer netminder in the 16th minute.
The Eagles kept up the pressure and outshot Cal Baptist 10-2 in the opening period, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The victory combined with losses by Point Loma Nazarene and Azusa Pacific, moves Biola into a first-place tie with Concordia. Both sets of Eagles are 4-1-0 overall with 12 points, though Biola won the head-to-head matchup between the two by a 1-0 count earlier this season.
Concordia downed Pt. Loma 2-0 earlier in the day while Azusa suffered possibly the biggest upset of the season, falling 1-0 at Hope International.
Biola travels to Vanguard University on Saturday (Oct. 14) for a GSAC match set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
