Eagles Put Up Fight, But No. 2 Fresno Pacific Prevails in Sweep

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The No. 16-ranked Biola volleyball team knew exactly what type of a team its was up against when it battled No. 2 Fresno Pacific on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Sunbirds boast four foreign players with international experience, are undefeated on the season and have won the last 15 matches between the two teams.

With all of that against them, the Eagles still came out fighting and nearly pulled off a stunning upset before falling in straight sets, 30-25, 30-28, 30-18.

Despite the fact that the Eagles' (11-9, 5-6 GSAC) most foreign players come from Colorado, they came out fighting in the first game and battled tough with the Sunbirds. After falling behind early at 16-12, the Eagles battled back and tied the match at 18.

Later in the game, with the score knotted at 22, the Sunbirds took a commanding lead as Shu Liu served five straight points and Fresno held on for the win.

Game two started out great for Biola as freshman setter Abbie Wright served four straight points to give the Eagles a 16-13 lead.

Biola kept up the pressure and held a 26-22 advantage late in the game before Fresno Pacific roared back, scoring eight of the final 10 points for the heartbreaking victory.

A distraught Eagle team had little left against Fresno in game three and put up little fight in a 30-18 loss.

Sophomore Meghan Scheenstra lead Biola with 14 kills while junior Brittany Wing added 10. The two had a solo block each as well.

Fresno's Brazilian connection led the way as Fabiana Leomil recorded 17 kills and Thais Julio added 10. Leomil hit .615 for the match, making just one error.

Biola hits the road looking to snap its three-match losing streak. The Eagles travel up to The Master's College for a GSAC match on Saturday (Oct. 14) at 7:00 p.m.
