Andy Smith was named assistant baseball coach for the Biola Eagles in 2017. Smith's duties include hitting and baserunning instruction, team operations, summer ball placement and recruiting.
The Eagles thrived when Smith joined the coaching staff, raising their record from 31-27 in 2016 to 35-18 in Smith's first season. Biola finished just one game out of first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference and finished the regular season ranked No. 24 in the NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll.
He instantly brought speed and pop to the Eagles' lineup as a player when he came to Biola in the 2014-15 academic year. Smith hit .310 during his senior year, stole 15 bases and collected 18 extra-base hits. He started in 46 of Biola's 47 games that season and was first or second on the team in six offensive categories.
Then in the summer of 2016, Smith joined Biola alum Sam Thorne on a San Diego Force squad that advanced to the semifinals of National Baseball Congress World Series. Smith went 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot in the game that clinched the 2016 Southern California Collegiate Baseball League championship for the Force.
