Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Eagles Duke It Out With CSUN

Biola gets five goals and three steals from Gwen Pidd and competes with CSUN.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In a closely contested non-conference matchup at the Lancer Invitational hosted by California Baptist University, Biola Women's Water Polo battled nationally ranked No. 25 CSU Northridge but fell 12-10.

The game was defined by timely defense and late momentum swings. Plenty of exclusions were called on both sides throughout the match, while Biola got called for five penalties over the 32 minutes of hard-fought action.

Head Coach Sarah Ramirez's Eagles kept the match close through every quarter, with the game never separated by more than a few possessions.

Despite the five penalty shot opportunities — three of which were converted by the Matadors — Biola stayed within striking distance in large part due to the standout play of Gwendolyn Pidd and the strong net presence of freshman goalkeeper Fernanda Luna

Pidd scored five goals on six shots, tying her career-high set vs. CSU Monterey Bay last season. She also had three steals to anchor the defensive effort and create counter opportunities fo BU. Luna turned aside two 5-meter attempts and added eight other stops and a steal in doing all she could to keep her team competitive.

Biola opened the scoring and trailed narrowly after the first quarter (3-1). After two quick scores from CSUN the Matadors held their largest lead of the game early in  Q2 (5-1). The two teams then traded tallies throughout the second and third, with BU outscoring CSUN 3-2 in the third period to bring the game closer.

Going into the fourth period, Biola remained within reach — showcasing poise against one of the nation's tougher mid-major programs. It's a rivalry that has seen close competition each of the three times these foes have met. CSUN now controls that all-time series 2-1.

Karly Lepel (1g, 1a) and Myah Ibarra (1g, 1a) also added multi-point efforts for the Eagles. Biola will stick around in Riverside and do battle with the hosts, CBU, at 4 p.m. at the Lancer Aquatics Center. Follow the game with live stats on The FOSH.
