Defense Does the Job

Eagles lock down Jessup for fourth straight win

LA MIRADA --- The Biola women's basketball team played the second game of their five-game homestand. The Eagles defeated the visiting Jessup Warriors, 49-38, for their fourth straight win.

"I am so proud of our defense today. Jessup was scrappy and tough to score on. Felt like we couldn't get any momentum on offense; however we take pride in our defense and tonight was one of our best showings. We made people miss and rebounded well," stated head coach Mike Simonson.

Jaycee Goldsmith led the Eagles with a season-high 16 points, providing a steady scoring presence when baskets were at a premium. Laney Grider matched her output with 16 points, continuing her consistent offensive play. Hanne Nybo had the boards covered, collecting 12 rebounds and adding seven points.

"Jaycee again was a key piece to our victory. She was physical and ran some great offense. She hit some huge shots that put us in a commanding lead," continued Simonson. "Laney did a great job thinking the game and showcased her IQ. She made some great reads and picked her spots to attack well."

Five Eagles entered the scoring column in the first quarter. Grider got things started with a smooth mid-range jumper. Aliyah Bantolina followed with a scoop and score, and Hanne Nybo converted a layup of her own. Danya Dykstra nailed a three at the buzzer, giving Biola momentum into the second frame.

A defensive-heavy second quarter limited the scoring for both sides. They combined for 13 points in the frame with the Eagles leading, 21-17 at half.

In the third quarter, Biola found an offensive stride. Grider, Goldsmith, and Nybo put up 19 points with Nybo connecting on a three-pointer at the buzzer.

In the fourth, the Eagles would never relinquish their lead. Goldsmith, Nybo, and Alyssa Kubo sealed it with timely buckets to stop any momentum from the Warriors.

With the win, Biola moves to 10-8 overall and 7-6 in conference play. The Eagles will face Chaminade on Monday, Feb. 2, in Chase Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.

"Aliyah created a lot of offense for others. She was a selfless player with her 5 assists. We will need to clean up a couple things for Monday vs Chaminade but we are excited to continue our home stand and play again in 48hrs."
