BU Defense Stands Tall in Narrow Loss

The Biola men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Cal State San Bernardino in their home opening match on Saturday Night at Al Barbour Field.

LA MIRADA—The Biola men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Cal State San Bernardino in their home opening match on Saturday Night at Al Barbour Field.

"We knew it was going to be a very direct and physical game today," stated head coach Joey O'Keefe. "They're a very good opponent that capitalizes on second chance opportunities, and that's what they did tonight."

O'Keefe continued, "We tried throwing multiple looks and tactics at them, but it just wasn't our night to put the ball in the back of the net."

The Eagles and Yotes both had opportunities to score in the first 16 minutes of the match but it was CSUSB who would score first in the 28th minute (1-0).

Eoin Kingsley had a shot on goal that was saved in the 11th minute and Francesco Tricarico made a save for Biola in the 16th.

Neither team managed to score in the second half but both teams had a shot on goal in the final 20 minutes of the match.

Tricarico made a huge save in the 80th minute to keep his team in the game and Brennan Furlan was nearly able to tie it up in the 84th minute.

"It's early in the season and I think we have so much to learn from the results of tonight's game that we can take and light a fire in our bellies to go compete in back-to-back home games this coming week," reflected O'Keefe.

"Our back line stood out for us again tonight," continued O'Keefe. "We've learned very quickly that they can handle a ton of pressure and consistently perform."

Biola's defensive line — Ethan Michael, Ethan Hardin, Gauthier Caloz, and David Setters — held strong for the full 90 minutes against the Yotes, while Tricarico guarded the Eagles' net for the entire match.

O'Keefe concluded, "We need to get healthy and recover quickly. Our amazing crowd of supporters in the stands deserve to see the team win. We owe it to them to push on to defend our home field next week."

The Eagles will regroup and get ready for their next match on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. against Regis University at Al Barbour Field.
