Second-Half Surge Propels Eagles Past Toros

The Biola men’s soccer team shutout Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 Saturday night at Al Barbour Field.

LA MIRADA---The Biola men's soccer team shutout Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 Saturday night at Al Barbour Field.

"Tonight was an important statement win for us," stated head coach Joey O'Keefe. "Coming off back to back to back games where we were leading 1-0 and then did not get the win, the team was hungry to prove that we could close out matches, especially here at home."

O'Keefe continued, "We tried a few new pieces today and tweaked our lineup, and the guys responded and executed perfectly. Everyone who played tonight put in an absolute shift. Dominguez Hills is always a top quality opponent, and they showed dangerous offensive abilities tonight. But our guys were up for a battle and determined to fight. We could not be more proud of our team getting a clean sheet."

The Eagles came alive in the second half, scoring goals in the 53rd, 57th and 85th minutes.

Brennan Furlan, assisted by Parker Vititoe, scored the first goal of the match. Furlan logged his third goal of the season and Vititoe, a freshman, earned the first assist of his career.

Jackson Finn netted BU's next goal in the 57th minute and Ryan Ellsworth sent in Biola's third goal in the 85th. Finn recorded his first goal of the season and Ellsworth netted his third of the year.

Biola's goalkeeper, Francesco Tricarico, played the full 90 minutes against the Toros and made one save. Ethan Michael and Ethan Hardin also played a big role in BU's defensive effort, totaling 90 minutes of action.

With the win, BU improves their overall record to 2-2-2. The Eagles play next on Saturday, September 27th at 7 p.m. against Azusa Pacific. The Eagles and Cougars will face off for a non-conference match-up at Al Barbour Field.

"Our fans have also been so important to us," expressed O'Keefe. "They showed up and showed out. the entire night they gave a boost to the guys on the field."

O'Keefe concluded, "We have a nice break until our next match, well deserved after six games in the last three weeks. We will rest and recover and then we look forward to defending our home turf next Saturday against our rivals APU."
