Building Together

With the conference schedule around the corner, Biola wrapped up the preseason with its sixth-straight win.

LA MIRADA ---  Momentum continued to build for Biola volleyball, as the Eagles extended their winning streak to six matches with a 3-1 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay (25–16, 25–18, 17–25, 26–24) on Saturday afternoon at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles came out sharp in the opening frame, riding a balanced attack from Kendall Vandertuig and Hannah Hanson. A 7-3 start quickly swelled to 19-13 after a pair of Vandertuig kills and a block with Hannah Guzzetti. Payton Tully closed the set with a kill that sealed a 25-16 win, but it was Vandertuig with the hot hand, piling on nine kills in the opening set.

Biola's best stretch came in set two, where the Eagles hit .379 as a team and looked in complete control. Freshman Savannah Simpson added a spark off the bench with a kill and block assist, as the lead peaked at eight points in the set. Early on, Lexi Lambert offered back-to-back service aces to stretch the lead to 9-4, and Biola kept its cushion the rest of the way to take it 25-18.

The Otters flipped the script in the third. After a tight start, CSUMB used a string of service aces and strong net play to surge ahead 18-13. Biola couldn't recover, dropping its first set this weekend, 25-17.

The deciding fourth proved to be a thriller. Biola jumped out to a 10-6 lead with kills from Tully and Vandertuig, but CSUMB fought back quickly for a 10-10 tie. 10 ties and four lead changes dictated a highly contested set all the way to a 24-24 scoreline. Vandertuig came through in the clutch, delivering a kill to give the Eagles match point for her 21st kill of the night, before an Otter attack error polished off the 26-24 win.

Vandertuig once again led the way with 21 kills at a .348 clip, adding 12 digs and five block assists for a match-high 24.5 points. It was her fourth match this season with double-digit kills.

Hanson added 12 kills, 19 assists, and 12 digs for her first triple-double of the year. Guzzetti chipped in six kills and seven block assists from the middle, and Lambert tallied 21 assists and three aces. Bri Bellfi covered the back row with 24 digs, giving her double-digit digs in each of the last three matches.

Biola (6-2) finished with 52 kills, seven aces, and 10 total blocks, holding Monterey Bay to .158 hitting.

The Eagles now turn their attention to the PacWest, as they are set to play Point Loma on the road on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
