Biola Upsets APU, Advances to Championship

The Biola women’s tennis team upset nationally-ranked No. 13 Azusa Pacific 4-2 and is headed to the title match of the PacWest Championships.

SURPRISE, Ariz.---The Biola women's tennis team upset nationally-ranked No. 13 Azusa Pacific 4-2  and is headed to the title  match of the PacWest Championships for the first time in program history.

The Eagles had the odds against them as APU entered the semifinal match as the PacWest's first-seed who had an 19-2 overall record, was 17-0 against PacWest opponents and was riding an 11-match winning streak. The Cougars also beat the Eagles twice in the regular season, 4-2 at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex and 4-3 at the Biola Tennis Center.

Biola, the fifth-seed with an 16-5 overall record, rose to the challenge beginning with winning the doubles point. APU won the first match on the first court but Biola would respond with victories on courts 2 & 3. Dafne Andres and Isabella Chavarria got the ball rolling for BU, defeating nationally-ranked No. 38 Karola Suviste and Stina Larsson 6-4 on the second court. Gaby Carvajal and Alexandria Mann then clinched the point on the third court with their 7-5 triumph.

The Eagles carried the momentum to singles. Chavarria, nationally-ranked #60 in singles,  put Biola ahead 2-0 with her 6-3, 6-1 win on the first court.

APU came back with a win on the fourth court to close the gap to 2-1, but Andres would record the next win on the third court to put BU ahead 3-1. The Freshman outlasted APU's Julia Jordan in three sets. She won the first 6-3, fell in the second 4-6 and came back to win the third 6-2.

Azusa Pacific answered with a singles win on the fourth court, but the Eagles held strong. All eyes turned to the second and sixth courts where Kailee Mazzeo and Mann were battling in their third sets.

Mazzeo would be the one to pull ahead first and clinch the match on the second court. She won her first set 7-3 in the tiebreak, lost her second 2-6 and won the third 6-3.

Mann's match on the sixth court was left unfinished. She split the first two sets and was leading her opponent 4-0 in the third.

The Eagles take on nationally-ranked #22 and the second-seed Point Loma in the Championship match tomorrow Saturday, April 19th at 9 a.m. at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club.
