Never Too Late for a Comeback

Biola baseball came alive in the ninth to save a win against Menlo on the road.

April 11, 2025

Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. --- The final road series for the Eagles began with a tremendous effort to pull off a victory. Biola (17-19, 14-15 PacWest) posted eight runs in the final frame to take down Menlo (5-30, 3-26 PacWest) in a 14-10 stunner in the opening game of a Friday doubleheader.

The Biola baseball squad continued its showcase of hitting, proving that no lead is safe against the Eagles.

On Friday afternoon, BU faced a deficit of six after six innings and a deficit of two entering the ninth but nothing could stop them.

The first surge in the comeback effort came in the seventh frame. James Whitman kicked off the rally with a solo homer and was followed by a walk and a double. The next run came across via a sac fly, before the Menlo hurlers lost control. BU drew three walks and two hit by pitches to tally three more runs before the end of the inning, bringing the scoreline to 7-6 in Menlo's favor.

The host squad landed a solo shot in the eighth, so the Eagles needed two runs to force extras or three to take the lead in the ninth.

With three outs standing between the Eagles and a loss, it did not take much time for Biola to eliminate the threat. Isaiah Leon was the leadoff man in the ninth and singled. Adiel Torres was the next to the dish and blasted a home run to knot the game at eight with no outs on the board.

A new game in the ninth opened the door and soon BU had the bases loaded with one out. Cole Thomson stepped in to lay down the sacrifice bunt but instead all runners were safe and Biola took the lead on a bunt single. Nicholas Whippo delivered more damage with a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch added another.

Leon landed the final blow, sending a home run over the face to bring in three runs for Biola. In the ninth inning alone, Biola scored eight runs and took a 14-8 lead.

The Oaks mustered two runs in the ninth but that was it, as Biola held on for the 14-10 comeback win.

Leon starred in the lineup, going 3-5 at the plate with four RBI and a homer.

Jack O'Brasky scored the win on the mound for his fourth this year.

Biola is set to face Menlo once again on Friday in the afternoon to complete the doubleheader.
