Bigs Plays in Big Moments

The battle at Freedom Field was a thriller but Biola came up clutch down the stretch for a game two victory.

LA MIRADA --- Nothing could hold back the Biola softball squad on Monday night, as the team secured a series sweep of Vanguard. Game two on Monday was a comeback win for BU, as Ariana Banos hit the walkoff single for a 4-3 Eagles victory.

"Our word this year is 'grit' and it definitely was a gritty win. It would have been easy to give up when it was 3-0 but they fought back and found a way to win," commented Head Coach Kristin Halte.

From the jump, Vanguard had the edge, scoring in the opening frame. A leadoff double made way for a 1-0 Lions lead early in the ballgame.

Biola had trouble answering, going scoreless through five innings. Makayla Jordan was the only Eagle to strike, nabbing singles in the second and fifth frames.

In the top of the sixth, Vanguard added some cushion with a small rally. Runners on second and third turned into two runs with a two-out single, giving the Lions a 3-0 lead.

Jackie Ibarra provided a spark with a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth. After moving to third on a wild pitch, she scored on a single from Alexa Medley. A second out followed, bringing Raquel Reyes to the plate. The veteran showed her experience, delivering with a home run to tie the game at three.

Reyes followed up her big hit by putting up a zero on the scoreboard in the circle. She worked around a double and a runner on third base to keep the visitors at three and help the team to extras.

Maddie Granados got the ball next and put together two solid innings for the Biola defense. She got the six necessary outs in the eighth and ninth to keep the Lions off the board.

The Biola offense looked to strike in the eighth with a leadoff triple from Leilani Salgado. Three-straight outs eliminated the threat and Biola would need to try again in the ninth.

As the second extra inning rolled around, Reyes found another opportunity to put her imprint on the game. She was the first batter to the plate and reached via a single. Mikala Huskey put Reyes within 60 feet of home with a double to center field.

A second out came across next, bringing up Banos with two down and the winning run on third. Banos battled back from an 0-2 count and forced a full count before placing the ball in the gap in right field. The single ended the game, giving Biola a 4-3 victory.

Granados scored her fourth win of the year in the circle.

Biola is right back at home on Tuesday, facing Pace at 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm.
