A Rey Of Sunshine

Back-to-Back dominant performances from Raquel Reyes have Biola up to 9 league wins in a row.

LA MIRADA, Calif.Raquel Reyes turned in her second shutout gem of the last three days at Freedom Field to help lift Biola to a daily doubleheader sweep of Dominican on Monday. Biola got RBI hits from Alexa Medley and Kendall Nakano to card a 2-0 win over the Penguins in the nightcap.

Reyes, Biola's graduate transfer and two-way player, held the visiting Penguins to just one bloop hit through seven scoreless frames and allowed only two base runners over the minimum. She's now turned in 15 consecutive scoreless innings spread across three outings since last Friday.

"I felt really good out there. I think both my back door and my curve were working really well, so I was hitting my spots and my defense had my back," said Reyes. "It's really nice because I know that whenever they put the ball in play the defense is going to make the play for me. They always have my back."

The Eagles' game-two starter had a perfect game going as she set down Penguins in order through the first three and two-thirds innings. At that point, the game was still without a run for either side and her dominance was all the more important. With two outs in the fourth inning, Dominican's designated player Annabelle Burke got the Penguins' only hit of the ballgame when she blooped one into left field.

Following the single, Reyes remained locked in. She retired 10 of the next 11 batters to cruise to the end of the game. This included cutting down the last five batters of the game in order.

In support of Reyes' effort, the Eagles scratched across two runs during their half of the fifth inning. A one-out single from Jackie Ibarra began the offense, with a triple from Alexa Medley being the at-bat to kick-start things in a big way. Medley drove in Ibarra and scored herself on the very next play when Nakano singled to knock her in.

"It's great. I feel like we are really starting to gel as a team with hitting, pitching and defense," said Reyes. "It's great to have these wins under our belt, and we hope to continue this moving forward."

Taylor Rodriguez went the distance for Dominican, dealing well with the BU lineup in holding the Eagles to just seven hits and the two runs, which is just about half the total hits the Eagles mustered in game one.

The Eagles' have now won six games in a row and nine PacWest Conference competitions in a row. It's Biola's longest conference winning streak since the latter stages of the conference season in 2023 when Biola won 10 in a row while building a 19-11 overall conference record. It's the team's second-longest conference winning streak since joining the PacWest.

Biola improves to 15-9 overall and 9-1 in league play following the win. They have a chance to get to 10 wins tomorrow as they host Dominican for one final game at 5:30 p.m.
