Biola Heats Up in Home Opener

McKenzie Hat Trick and Dachenhausen's 10 saves fuel statement win over CUI

LA MIRADA --- The Biola men's water polo team snapped the Concordia Golden Eagles' six-game winning streak today by a final score of 10-9.

The Eagles put together a well-rounded performance, scoring more goals on fewer shots than their opponent. Gavin McKenzie led the way with three goals and two assists. Nick Murray added two goals of his own while Caleb Hernandez, Adam Lavoy, Kyle Siefen, Noah Ryznar and Alec Abrahamian each contributed a goal for Biola. Joshua Dachenhausen was clutch in goal with 10 saves and a save percentage of 52%.

When asked about his team's performance, head coach Jens Cole stated, "We put four quality periods together, played as a team, and stuck to our game plan."

The Eagles fought to take the lead in the first two frames, but would fall just short. McKenzie got the scoring started with back-to-back goals for Biola in the first period. Ryznar would level the score at 3-3 but CUI would lead 5-3 heading into the halftime break.

Biola dominated the third period, outscoring CUI four to one. "It just kind of all clicked for us today." Abrahamian wasted no time after Ryznar won the sprint, swinging momentum in Biola's favor. Lavoy and Murray went one-two, knotting the score at six apiece and Murray would close the quarter with a goal, giving the Eagles a one-goal advantage into the final frame.

CUI would answer at the start of the fourth but it wasn't enough. Seifen and McKenzie would widen the margin to two once more, and Hernandez scored the game-winning goal for BU with two minutes left on the clock.

The Eagles improve to 5-16 and 1-0 in conference, while CUI drops to 14-10 and 0-1 in conference.

Biola will be back in the pool on Saturday as they take on UC Davis at 11 a.m. in La Mirada.
