Thriller slips from Eagles

Biola's four game win streak snapped on the road

ATHERTON, CALIF The Biola Volleyball team took on a PacWest opponent, the Menlo Oaks in Haynes-Prim Pavilion. The Eagles four game win streak was snapped in a four set thriller (25-19, 17-25, 27-29, 24-26).

Set one started back and forth, as each team traded points, finding themselves tied at 13 all. Kendall Vandertuig and Juliana Van Ommering led a 13-6 run, capped by a powerful block by Hannah Guzzetti and Hannah Hanson captured the first frame for the Eagles.

BU's offense struggled in set two. After keeping it close for the first few points, the Oaks found their stride. Despite momentum kills from Payton Tully, Vandertuig, and Guzzetti, the Eagles fell 25-17.

Sets three and four were packed with extra-point drama. In the third, Hanson and Van Ommering led the attack. The Eagles had three set points but were unable to finish the job. Back-to-back kills from the Oaks closed it out, 29-27.

In the fourth, Van Ommering and Vandertuig combined for nine kills but it wouldn't be enough. Guzzetti rejected two straight Oak attacks, giving the Eagles the lead, 21-20. After trading service faults, Biola couldn't stop three consecutive kills from Menlo, clinching the match, 26-24.

Overall, Van Ommering bounced 14 kills on .414 hitting percentage. Vandertuig and Hanson had near double doubles in kills and digs. Guzzetti had six blocks while Simi Kapustova, Hanson, and Vandertuig tallied three each.

The Eagles fall to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Biola will play tomorrow in Warrior Arena against Jessup for a non-conference match-up at 1 p.m.
