Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

A Flurry Of Finishes

Six goals are scored in a wild conference contest at Al Barbour Field.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Scoring was the story at Al Barbour Field on Saturday night as Biola Men's Soccer and Westmont tangled for each team's PacWest Conference opener.

The visiting Warriors scored two goals in each half to pace the effort and work their way to a 4-2 victory over Biola. Westmont was awarded three penalty kicks in the game and still managed four goals despite missing two of those three PK attempts.

Biola thought it had brought the game back within one with about 10 minutes left, but an offside call brought that goal back and stymied all of the comeback momentum Biola had built.

Westmont secured the contest by scoring three unanswered goals between the 32nd minute and 79th minute. The Warriors' four goals came from the feet of two players as both Erik Guerrero and Serkan Durna scored two goals each.

Biola had its goal tally started by Cruz Navarro in the 26th minute and then newcomer Leandro Weingaertner banged one home from far out just 30 seconds after Westmont notched its fourth goal.

The Eagles actually held advantages in both possession and shots in this game, but the Eagles could not finish with near the efficiency of the Warriors' side. Westmont's two first-half goals came on just six shot attempts.

The Warriors' keeper managed seven saves against the Biola attack, mostly deterring Brennan Furlan who managed to direct three shots on target in this one but could not get it past the keeper.

Another notable area where Biola had a significant advantage was in corner kick opportunities. The BU team was so far out on the front foot they managed to win 13 corners in this one. Only, again, the finishing was just not there. The defense only surrendered one corner kick to the Westmont side.

This loss is a stinging one for a Biola team with high aspirations for 2024. Home conference losses will set the team back a bit from its target of another league title. Following this 4-2 loss, the Eagles drop to 2-5-1 on the season and 0-1 in PacWest play.

They will look to bounce back on Thursday at 4 p.m. against rival Concordia University Irvine (2-3, 0-1 PacWest).
