Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Close, But Never A Doubt

Biola has a big first half and then hangs on to survive in home opener win vs. Westcliff.

LA MIRADA,  Calif. — Things got close, but never really in doubt on Wednesday morning at SPLASH! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center as Biola Men's Water Polo earned victory in its home opener.

Head Coach Rick Nordell's fourth-year Biola Eagles hosted the fourth-year Westcliff Warriors in the two teams' sixth meeting all-time. The Eagles picked up a 10-9 home win to move to 4-2 all-time in matchups against the Warriors.

Biola built a nice cushion early, outscoring the Warriors 7-3 through the game's first 18 minutes of play. That lead would lapse in the second half with a flurry of final frame goals from the Warriors. Following a blocked 5-meter, a quick score from Westcliff with just 0.5 seconds left on the clock made the final score just that one-goal differential.

Mitchell Carpenter blocked two five-meter penalties in this match and Nolan Rapp scored four times to highlight the individual efforts for BU. Carpenter played the whole 32 minutes and finished with 11 saves, two steals and an assist.

Rapp scored once in the fourth, once in the third and had two in the first to aid Biola's strong start. The senior boosted his team-leading tally to 17 goals on the season. He added one assist to make for a 5-point morning in the first home match of his senior season.

Biola trailed 1-0 but then never trailed again in this game. The Eagles had a multi-goal advantage from the third minute all the way through until that final second score.

Carpenter got the ball live from a deep defensive corner to drain that final second and run out the clock. The Eagles' power play defense was a big asset this morning as they held the Warriors to just two power play goals on 13 opportunities. The Eagles will look to sure up the defensive discipline though, as they had two players get rolled from the match in the final minute of play as a result of stacking exclusions.

Six other Eagles beside Rapp found their way on to the score sheet with single goals. Gavin McKenzie was especially busy early on with 1 goal, a pair of assists and some exclusions drawn.

The win gets Biola to 3-8 for the season. They will continue play later in this day with a scheduled 2 p.m. home match up against La Verne. Catch that game live at splash or online via the live feed at https://www.pacwestnetwork.tv/biola/.
