Naranjo Garners Top WWPA Award, Three Named All-WWPA

Veralie Naranjo was labeled the WWPA Player of the Year on Thursday, while being joined by Maria Roldan Gonzalez and Myah Ibarra as All-WWPA.

April 25, 2024

VISTA, Calif. --- A challenging and hard-fought 2024 regular season delivered with multiple postseason conference accolades, as announced on Thursday. The WWPA offices awarded Veralie Naranjo the WWPA Player of the Year honor along with a First Team All-WWPA selection. Maria Roldan Gonzalez followed up for Biola with a Second Team All-WWPA nod and Myah Ibarra was named All-WWPA Honorable Mention and to the All-Freshman team.

The Eagles capped off 2024 with a 11-16 overall record but held the No. 1 seed in the west for the WWPA Tournament with a 5-1 conference record.

Veralie Naranjo was a huge part of the BU offense throughout the season, earning the WWPA Player of the Year Award and All-WWPA First Team honor. Naranjo picked up her second individual award from the WWPA, after nabbing the Newcomer of the Year honor in 2022. She ranked second in the conference with 70 goals and fourth in points at 84. Naranjo reached at least five goals in a single game five times, including a season-high of seven goals against CSU Fullerton.

The junior was a force to be reckoned with, tacking on 50 drawn exclusions and 10 assists. Her strong play helped her to three WWPA Offensive Player of the Week honors. Consistency was key for Naranjo who landed at least one goal in 23-of-26 games, while ending the season on a 16-game scoring streak.

Roldan Gonzalez nabbed her third-straight All-WWPA honor with the second team nod on Thursday. She did it all for the Eagles in 2024 with 45 goals, 19 assists, 24 drawn exclusions, and 49 steals.

The senior was stout on defense, picking up the first WWPA Defensive Player of the Week this season. Roldan Gonzalez ranked sixth in the conference for overall points at 64 and second for steals at 49. She also added four field blocks

Ibarra made an immediate impact as a true freshman, on her way to the All-Freshman Team and an All-WWPA Honorable Mention. Ibarra recorded 23 goals and 12 assists with a .479 shooting percentage and drew 14 exclusions, while picking up 17 steals and two field blocks.  The freshman kept her cool in a close game against Iona, sinking the game-winner in the final minute.

The Eagles will be back in the pool on Friday, kicking off the WWPA Tournament with a matchup against #4 seed in the east, Gannon, at 1:15 pm at the Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center.
