90 Feet Away

Biola was 90 feet away from forcing extras but fell short at Azusa Pacific in game one.

AZUSA, Calif. --- A Cornerstone Cup matchup lived up the hype on Friday with a game one thriller. Both teams had a moment in the limelight but Azusa Pacific (9-15, 4-5 PacWest) ended the game on top over Biola (13-10-1, 5-4 PacWest) by a narrow, 7-6, margin.

Home runs dictated the pace for the BU offense on Friday. The first runs of the game came off a James Whitman round tripper, tacking on three scores for the Eagles. It was the eighth of the year for the sophomore, who has slugged over .700 on the season.

Andrew Lujan left the yard next, blasting one deep over the right field fence. The long ball came with the bases empty for a solo shot.

In between the two homers, the Cougars struck on offense. APU tallied two in the fifth with a pair of doubles but still trailed to the Eagles, 3-2. That all changed with a five-spot in the seventh. The Cougars rallied with five hits, including a three-run homer to take control of the game.

Following Lujan's home run, Isaiah Leon looked to continue the effort back into the game with a double into left field. Another swing was not necessary for Leon to touch home, as a passed ball and wild pitch brought home another fun for BU, cutting the deficit to 7-5 in the top of the eighth. Back-to-back singles kept the inning alive for Biola with a runner in scoring position. Unfortunately, the hosting Cougars found the third out before either runner reached home.

Jake Anderson struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth, leaving the two-run deficit for the BU offense in the top of the ninth.

Austin Carillo kicked off the final frame with a crucial single up the middle. The BU center fielder stole second, before Wyatt Duncan grabbed a single for runners on first and third with one out. Whitman brought Carillo home and moved pinch runner, Jonathan Smith, to second with a groundout and the Eagles were within one run.

Lujan stepped to the dish next and drew a walk. A passed ball moved Lujan and Smith up one base, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Smith stood just 90 feet from home looking to tie the game but a strikeout cut the rally short and the game finished at 7-6 in favor of APU.

Both starting pitchers got the job done through four frames. Bobby Brown delivered four scoreless innings to open the game and put together a stretch of eight-consecutive outs.

Leon was strong at the plate with four hits, including a double and a run scored. Taylor Justus added strength in the back half of the lineup as well with three base hits.

Game two in Azusa, California is set to start just after 5:00 pm on Friday.
