November 20, 2024

VISTA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Water Polo polished off the 2024 regular season in second place in the west region of the WWPA with plenty of spectacular performers in the pool. The group pulled in seven awards, including four All-WWPA selections and three All-Defensive Team nods between John Grasso, Mitchell Carpenter, Nolan Rapp, and Gavin McKenzie.

The All-WWPA First Team featured a pair of Eagles in John Grasso and Mitchell Carpenter. Nolan Rapp came through next, earning a Second Team All-WWPA recognition and Gavin McKenzie was after that with an All-WWPA Honorable Mention. Grasso, Carpenter, and Rapp each added to the team honors, being named to the WWPA All-Defensive Team.

Grasso did it all for BU on the way to his first All-WWPA selection, ranking in the top 10 in the conference for goals (8th), field blocks (7th) and steals (1st). He was Biola's leading scorer in 2024, finishing the season on a tear, scoring 16 goals through the final five games. On the year, he accumulated 14 games with multiple goals.

On defense, he was another enforcer in the middle, picking up 56 steals and 11 field blocks which ranked first and seventh in the WWPA, respectively. Grasso also nabbed the final WWPA Player of the Week award for the 2024 season.

Carpenter held the lion's share of responsibility in goal for BU. He reached 1,000 career blocks and had 13 double-digit save performances this season. He also won the WWPA Defender of the Week award three times this year. He totaled 252 saves to lead the WWPA and posted the second-lowest goals-against average at 13.42.

Rapp was a well-rounded talent, finishing in the top three for goals, assists, points, steals, field blocks and sprint wins for the team. In the conference, he ranked fourth in assists with 48, fifth in points with 98, 8th in sprint wins with 12 and second in steals with 55. He was also a strong attacker, hitting a goal in 25 games. He also put together a streak of 15-straight games with a score.

Nolan finished the year second in the conference in steals with 55 and added seven field blocks. He also earned the WWPA Player of the Week honor for the week of September 23-29.

McKenzie played well in the center in his first campaign for the Eagles. He ranked third on the team with 33 goals but led the team with 44 drawn exclusions. He was a force on offense with nine multi-goal outings in 2024. McKenzie added three field blocks and 17 steals on defense.

The Eagles are entering postseason play and will be headed to the WWPA tournament, beginning Friday at 11:00 am with a matchup against No. 3 East seed McKendree.
