Biola Beats Broncos

A tough bout went the way of the Eagles, as BU men’s basketball kept up its strong pace in the non-conference schedule.

POMONA, Calif. --- The Eagles (3-1) got the job done on Saturday afternoon in a tussle with Cal Poly Pomona (3-1). The road matchup was tight-knit throughout but it was Biola to find the edge in the closing minutes for a 83-79 victory.

Biola separated from the Broncos with efficient free throw shooting, leading to its third win of the year. Despite shooting three less foul shots, the Eagles made five more free throws than the hosting Broncos. The BU squad converted at a 86.4 percent clip at the charity stripe on Saturday and boasted the 10th best free throw percentage in the nation through four games.

The starting five for BU was all of the offense with Casey Cappo and Nathan Medina leading the way with 25 points apiece.

The duo of Cappo and Medina played an important role down the stretch, combining for 13 of the team's final 16 points. A 67-67 tie with six minutes to go, led into a 16-12 run for BU, thanks to layups and free throws from Cappo and Medina, including a successful and-one finish for the junior guard, Medina.

As the clock ticked under 30 seconds left, Cappo provided the big play, collecting an offensive rebound to force a foul and put BU on the line. Medina sank the free throws to put the team up two possessions.

Daniel Esparza led the team in multiple categories on Saturday, posting seven boards, six assists and two steals. Cappo matched him on the glass with seven rebounds, while going 12-for-12 from the free throw line to aid his 25-point performance.

Erik Howlin was a model of efficiency, missing just one shot on the way to 15 points. His lone missed shot came from behind the arc, as he shot 85.7 percent from the field.

The Eagles will return to the court next Saturday at 7:30 pm in a bout against La Sierra inside Chase Gymnasium.
