Eagles Host Season Opener

The kickoff event for the 2023-24 Biola swimming and diving season saw BU face Simon Fraser at Lansing Pool on Saturday.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles had the chance to showcase their talent to their home fans on Saturday in a dual meet against Simon Fraser. The season opener saw the Biola women's team grab a 126-78 victory, while the men were defeated by Simon Fraser 82-116.

The diving portion of the meet occurred first but only featured Biola competitors. Six divers between the men and women took to the boards to score their attempts.

Caleb Pook stood out with a 319.40 score in the 1m diving. The sophomore notched a pool record with the showing, while accomplishing a NCAA qualifying mark. He also took first in the 3m dive with a score of 253.75 and was followed by teammate, Sebastian Burgos, at 213.00.

On the women's side, Abby DePina was the top scorer in the 1m dive, recording a total of 250.20. Lorelai Carney came next at 249.70, while also claiming the crown in the 3m dive at 230.95.

The women's squad took home five event crowns and swept the medal stand in two separate events. 

The 200 free saw dominance from the Eagles with the top three spots held by Biola student-athletes. Freshman Kimmy Gordon took the victory with a mark of 1:58.10 in her first collegiate individual race. Sofia Chavez-Varela came in .53 seconds after Gordon and was followed by Emma Guerrero in bronze.

The podium was also filled by BU in the women's 200 butterfly with Morgan Kampfer leading the way. The junior logged a time of 2:08.72, beating the field by nearly five seconds. Emilee Elizondo nabbed silver at 2:13.36 in her collegiate debut on Saturday, while Chavez-Varela came next at 2:13.70.

The men's lone event win came in the long distance race of 1000yd freestyle. Noah Hall displayed his endurance, winning the event crown with six seconds of breathing room. The second year standout finished with a time of 9:53.18.

The 400yd medley relay opened the swim portion of the meet and the Eagles jumped in front with a strong performance. The women's relay team of Allison Yancey, Meghan Tolman, Kampfer and Gordon won the race with a time of 3:57.76 and were followed closely by another BU relay team in second place.

Yancey continued her impressive day with a first place finish in the 200yd backstroke event. The 15th event of the day saw Yancey land on top with a time of 2:11.18.

The women's 400yd individual medley was dominated by Coco Friedley. Friedley posted the fastest 50 split in all but one split to take the crown with a mark of 4:37.43. Not far off the leader's pace, Rachel Munch nabbed second at 4:42.20.

Biola swimming and diving will be back in action at the UC Santa Cruz Slug Shootout on Friday and Saturday October 13 and 14.
