Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Beginning Against The Best

Biola Men's Water Polo challenges itself with the Triton Invitational in 2023.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Biola Men's Water Polo is back in the prestigious UC San Diego Triton Invitational. After taking one year away, Head Coach Rick Nordell welcomed the challenge of putting this team into one of the premier tournaments in the country on opening weekend.

As a reward for entering, the Eagles drew the hosts and No. 11 team in the country UC San Diego for the season opener. The Tritons flexed their muscle in the early going to build a big lead. Biola scored multiple goals in the fourth period, but ultimately dropped the season opener by a score of 17-4.

"We are very excited to begin season number three and to be competing against some of the best teams in the nation," said Nordell. "The experience we gain from playing these teams will benefit us greatly down the road during the season."

Maxwell Osborn scored the Eagles' first goal of the season just two-and-a-half minutes in when Nolan Rapp set up a one-time shot for the senior at the far post.

That tally tied the match at one just before UCSD went on to score seven unanswered goals to take a 8-1 lead into halftime. The hosts added three more out of the half to extend all the way to 10-1 before Adam LaVoy broke through for BU.

LaVoy, Rapp and Christian Trapp would score one goal each to give Biola three scores over the final 11 minutes of play to show some late fight over the top-flight UCSD side.

Biola will look to learn from this one, after going 0-for-1 on 5-meter penalty chances and 1-for-7 on the power play. On the plus side, the Eagles defended well when the Tritons were on 6-on-5, holding them to 2-for-9 when a man-up.

Joshua Dachenhausen had the chance to defend the cage in the final quarter and showed some solid form, recording four saves in that period alone.

Up next for the Eagles is another ranked opponent, a 3:45 p.m. matchup with No. 20 Navy. The Eagles faced Navy on opening weekend in 2022 and lost 12-7 to the Midshipmen. They Eagles are 0-2 all-time vs. Navy.
