Late Goal Stuns Eagles

A late goal would end up being the deciding factor in the men’s soccer team’s 2-1 loss to CSU San Bernardino at Al Barbour Field.

LA MIRADA— A late goal would end up being the deciding factor in the Biola men's soccer team's 2-1 loss to CSU San Bernardino at Al Barbour Field.

The Yotes (2-0-0 overall) were first to break the ice, scoring the match's first goal in the 19th minute of the first half. CSUSB played some crafty defense, preventing Biola (0-1-1 overall) from getting their shots in. The Eagles were only able to get in one shot in the first half but the Yotes were only slightly more successful, getting in three.

After San Bernardino's first goal, Gijs van Schouten made a momentum-stumping save that kept his team within arms reach heading into the second half.

The halftime break proved favorable to the Eagles who tied the match up in the 53rd minute. Pedro Ashley scored his first collegiate goal which knotted the score at 1-1.

The intensity picked up with the evened score as both teams were battling to get the go-ahead goal. Both team's goalkeepers were tested in the fray, van Schouten made three saves for his team and the Yotes' goalkeeper made two.

Dylan Memory supplied both of the Eagles' on goal shots and Biola sent a total of seven shots toward CSUSB in the second half.

The Yotes ended up getting the first break in the battle, receiving a late penalty kick (in the 84th minute) that resulted in a CSUSB goal and a 2-1 lead.

Biola scrambled to pick up the game's pace, but were unable to match San Bernardino's goal in their eventual 2-1 loss.

Biola plays next on Wednesday, Sep. 6 at 3 p.m. against CSU San Marcos at The Cage.
